Aware that many negative attitudes, deep prejudices, and profound ignorance about bisexual, gay, and lesbian people, which resulted in the exclusion of bisexual, gay, and lesbian people in churches the delegates of the 1989 Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to initiate the Welcoming Congregation program to educate its members.

Our church is seeking Green Sanctuary status as part of our 40 year tradition of being an environmentally aware congregation, to fulfill our Seventh Principle which is to promote respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part, and to demonstrate leadership in religious environmental stewardship in Delaware County. A "Green Sanctuary" is a church that not only embodies the ideals of environmental awareness and responsibility, but it also one that has been certified by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) as a "Green Sanctuary". (See this link for information about the UUA's Green Sanctuary Program.)  The Green Sanctuary movement is the primary structure for achieving these goals within the UUA.
