Brandon Mundell, service leader
Our annual observance of the birth of our nation will include readings of historical documents, songs of Americana and reflections on the experience of being an "American." Join us as we celebrate and honor our national heritage with observations about both its triumphs and tribulations.

In Religious Education, Art Camp with Shonet Martin kicks off on July 5. Each Sunday will be focusing on the style and techniques of a great artist. Art Camp Sundays are July 5, 12, and 19 and August 2, 9, and 16.

"One Nation Under God?"
Discussion based on an essay in Newsweek.com, April 7, 2009, entitled "One Nation Under God?"  The latest Newsweek Poll finds shifting American attitudes about religion, faith, and politics.  The number of people who consider the U.S. a Christian nation has fallen from 71% in 2005 to 62%.  The poll shows that the GOP has recently lost ground to Democrats among all measured faith groups.  A copy of the article will be available to all discussion participants.  Discussion leader: Nancy Chamberlain.

Upcoming Sundays

Sunday, July 12, 10:45 a.m.

"Christian Fundamentalism and the Trial of the Century"
Lowell Brummett, guest speaker
One Sunday each summer, Lowell Brummett shares with us what he has been reading and thinking about during the year. Lowell finds the 1920's a fascinating epoch in US history. On July 12, he will be speaking on the Scopes trial in Dayton, TN, in July 1925. You may have seen "Inherit the Wind", but the movie contains less than half the truth about John Scopes, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryant. The so-called Monkey Trial was more than a test of the Butler Act that outlawed the teaching of evolution in schools; it was a product of the conflicting cultural cross-currents in the American psyche of that time: religion vs. science, church vs. state, elitism vs. populism. Sound familiar?

Video Series Discussion Group & Ongoing Discussion Group
"Update on Iran"
Mohammad and Nancy Behforouz have extensive experience in Iran, and can give insight into Iran's recent tumultuous election. Mohammad will present a brief history of the Shiite branch of Islam. He will then discuss the religious basis of the Islamic Republic of Iran, especially in regard to recent political events. Sufficient time will be allocated for questions and answers by Nancy and Mohammad.
